Vietnam women got their campaign in the second round of the 2019 AFC U-16 Women’s Championship qualifiers with a 1-0 win over Laos at the New Laos National Stadium in Laos on Sunday.
Hosts Laos’ Vilayphone Phengsana scored the own goal that turned out to be the winner for Vietnam.
Vietnam are grouped in Group A of the second round of qualification along with Australia, Laos and IR Iran with the matches to be held in Laos from March 3 to 7.
While Vietnam collected all three points, Australia women also took the maximum points as they thrashed IR Iran 3-0 in the early kick off.
Vietnam will now face Australia on March 5 while Iran takes on Laos. The final match day on March 7 will see Vietnam taking on Iran and Australia playing Laos.
The Vietnamese girls had made it to the second round of the qualification after finishing second behind Bangladesh in the first round held in September last year. They finished ahead of Lebanon, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain back then.
Meanwhile in Group B, hosts Myanmar defeated Philippines 3-0 in a dead rubber final group fixture after both teams had crashed out of the tournament. Su Pyae Pyae Kyaw, Zim Mar Htwe and Swe Mar Aung scored the goals for Myanmar girls.
Group winners China PR and Bangladesh progressed to the final round from the group.
Top two teams from each group qualify for the eighth edition of the tournament to be held in Thailand from September 15 to 28. DPR Korea are the defending champions having own the tournament in Thailand back in 2017.
