Vishwa Fernando took a career-best four for 62 as Sri Lanka made an encouraging start to the first Test against South Africa in Durban.

Fernando removed openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar and the hosts were reeling on 17 for three before Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma steadied the ship.

Du Plessis hit 35 and Bavuma 47 as the duo put on a crucial 72 for the fourth wicket, before Quinton de Kock top-scored with 80.

However, wickets fell steadily around de Kock and South Africa were eventually dismissed for 235.

Dale Steyn struck early to remove Lahiru Thirimanne but Sri Lanka were nicely placed at 49 for one at the close of play.
