Red Bull have unveiled a striking new livery design on a car they hope will fire them towards a first championship success in six years.

For the new RB15, the team appeared to have ditched the famous Red Bull logo that has featured on every one of their cars since they took over Jaguar ahead of the 2005 campaign.

However, Red Bull have previous in teasing fans with maverick designs that were only used in pre-season testing, only to revert to a more conventional look in time for the opening race of the season.

Back in 2015 the team released an abstract black and white design akin to a zebra that was used throughout pre-season testing, only to be dropped in time for first race of the season.

A statement from Red Bull’s website hinted the new look could only make a brief appearance, claiming it to be a ‘special edition livery’ for the arrival of the new Honda engines and driver Pierre Gasly.

‘The RB15 has been unleashed’, a statement said. ‘Donning a special edition livery, the RB15 drives the team into a new era thanks to the arrival of Honda power and an exciting new driver pairing.

Red Bull’s new car was unveiled on the same day as defending champions Mercedes, who the team will hope they can wrestle both championships off in the upcoming season.

Both teams also gave their cars a track debut with a shakedown session at Silverstone, which will host this year’s British Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen drove the RB15 around the circuit and although his team-mate Gasly was also at the track, he will have to wait until pre-season testing kicks off next week at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona to get his hands on the car.

There was a mixed reaction from fans on social media at the livery unveiling, with some fans begging the team not to alter the design, others left revolted by the dramatic departure while one supporter compared it with the red and black face of Star Wars villain Darth Maul.
