Sydney FC's historical edge ahead of A-League grand final

They may be the away team, but Sydney FC will fancy their chances of upsetting Perth Glory in the A-League grand final on Sunday.

The Sky Blues have won 10 of their last 11 A-League clashes against Glory and claimed a 3-0 victory in their only previous finals’ encounter.

Sydney FC are also just the second team in the competition’s history to win a grand final outside of their state, making the trip to Perth a bit less intimidating.

Glory’s home record is impressive however, with Tony Popovic’s side losing just one of their past 10 league games in Western Australia – keeping six clean sheets in the process.

Popovic has been a big factor behind Perth’s strong season but has tasted grand final defeat in all three of the A-League deciders he’s reached as a coach.

“I feel honoured to be in my fourth grand final,” Popovic said.

“I’ve probably covered every single base in terms of doing something in a different way.”

The Sky Blues will arrive in Perth on the back of a stunning 6-1 defeat of Melbourne Victory, while Glory required penalties to edge past Adelaide United after squandering the lead three times.

A massive crowd is expected at Optus Stadium on Sunday with stats and recent form making this A-League decider a very difficult one to pick.

Key Opta stats:

  • Sydney FC have won 10 of their last 11 Hyundai A-League games against Perth Glory (L1), including a 3-0 win in their only previous post-season clash (Semi Final, 2016/17).
  • Perth Glory have lost only one of their last 10 Hyundai A-League games on home turf (W8, D1), keeping six clean sheets in that period.
  • This will be Sydney FC’s fifth appearance in a Hyundai A-League Grand Final (W3, L1) – only Melbourne Victory (6) have made more – and their first against a team other than Melbourne Victory since the competition’s inaugural campaign (vs Central Coast Mariners, 2005-06).
  • Only twice in A-League history has any team won the A-League Grand Final outside of their own state
  • Joel Chianese was directly involved in all three of Perth Glory’s goals in their last home game against Sydney FC (two goals and one assist) – his most ever goal involvements in a single A-League game
