In a thrilling finish on Wednesday (February 14), Windies A scraped through against England Lions by two wickets in the first unofficial Test in Jamaica. Jack Leach put up a stunning show to almost steal a win under the hosts’ noses before Rahkeem Cornwall saw his side past the finishing line. Leach picked up four wickets in quick time to finish with a five-wicket haul as Windies A slipped from 51 for 1 to 98 for 8 in the chase of 106.

In total, Leach picked up eight wickets in the game as his figures of 8 for 110 are now the best by an England Lions spinner. Cornwall, who hit the winning runs, was also the hero with the ball earlier in the game. His five-wicket haul in the first innings helped Windies A bowl out Lions for 252 in the first innings. In reply, the home side were reeling at 114 for 8 before Shane Dowrich and Jomel Warrican led a stunning revival via a century stand. They added 161 for the ninth wicket with Dowrich going past three figures. Eventually, the visitors took a 27-run lead in the first innings.

Cornwall dented Lions very early in their second innings as skipper Keaton Jennings departed for a 12-ball duck. But from 75 for 2, the Lions lost their plot as Warrican ran through their lineup with a seven-wicket haul that saw them lose eight wickets for just 57 runs, which almost sealed their fate. The second Test begins on February 18 at Sabina Park.

Brief scores: England Lions 252 (Paul Coughlin 60; Rahkeem Cornwall 5-68) & 132 (Haseeb Hameed 39; Jomel Warrican 7-33) lost to Windies A 279 (Shane Dowrich 119; Jack Leach 3-84) & 108/8 (Jack Leach 5-26) by two wickets.
