Uncapped Shaeen Afridi, Saad Ali named in Pakistan Test squad

Left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi and left-handed batsman Saad Ali have been included in the Pakistan squad for the first two Tests of the three-match series against New Zealand, both receiving their maiden call-ups to the Test team.

The 18-year–old Afridi picked up four-wicket hauls in the first two ODIs against New Zealand, and had earlier bagged three wickets in the second T20I against the same team. The 25-year-old Saad Ali was rewarded for his recent performances in first-class cricket, which included a knock of 144 against New Zealand A recently.

The Pakistan selectors decided to rest Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan, who will both undergo training at the National Cricket Academy. Meanwhile, Mohammad Amir was left out of the team again, with Mohammad Abbas, Hasan Ali, and Mir Hamsa among the seamers available for selection along with Afridi.

“The team has been selected keeping in mind the conditions of the UAE, where Shahdab Khan and Fakhar Zaman have been rested from the Test matches and have also been advised to undergo training at the NCA,” Inzamam ul Haq, the Pakistan chief selector, said in a media release.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi has been included in the squad keeping his current form. Saad Ali included in the side after performing in domestic cricket and recent Pakistan ‘A’ series in the UAE.”

The first Test gets underway from November 16 in Abu Dhabi followed by the second Test in Dubai from November 24. The teams return to Abu Dhabi for the third Test which starts on December 3.
