Adelaide Strikes vs Hobart Hurricanes, Adelaide

Sophie Devine’s unbeaten 53-ball 99 wasn’t enough for a win as the allrounder had to chip in with a performance in the Super Over to take her team to a win. After the game ended on a tie with both teams scoring 189, Hobart Hurricanes set a target of 13 for a win in the shootout. Devine walked in to smash six, six, four to seal it for her team but they continue to languish at the bottom after just three wins in 11 games.

Devine scored 31 runs in the last ten deliveries she faced to race an unbeaten 99 off 53 while batting first. Needing three off the final delivery of the innings, all she could manage was a couple against Heather Knight, who had leaked 49 runs from her four overs.

In the chase, Smriti Mandhana smashed 52 off 25 while Georgia Redmayne’s unbeaten 54 helped the side seal a tie late in the contest. Needing eight in the final over, just three in the first five balls before Katelyn Fryett smashed a boundary on the final delivery to extend the game.

Brief scores: Adelaide Strikers 189/5 in 20 overs (Sophie Devine 99*, Tahlia McGrath 63) tied with Hobart Hurricanes 189/8 in 20 overs (Georgia Redmayne 54*, Smriti Mandhana 52; Sarah Coyte 3-32). Strikers won the clash after the Super Over.

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades, Sydney

Alex Blackwell brought all her experience to the fore and guided Sydney Thunder to a six-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades. The captain scored an unbeaten 48-ball 66 in chase of 140 and finished the game with five balls to spare. They were in a tight spot but Nicola Carey’s six-ball 13 in the end took the pressure off Blackwell and eased the side over the line.

Reduced to 65 for 3, Thunder recovered a bit after a 41-run stand between Harmanpreet Kaur and Blackwell. The former was run out in the 17th over before the late assault snatched the win from Renegades.

Earlier, Danielle Wyatt scored 59 off 53 to guide the team to a fighting score as the top order made handy contributions. Sophie Molineux (27 off 19), Amy Satterthwaite (18) and Jessica Duffin (25) played around Wyatt but 18 runs in the final two overs hurt their chances.

Brief scores: Melbourne Renegades 139/4 in 20 overs (Danielle Wyatt 59; Nicola Carey 2-25) lost to Sydney Thunder 141/4 in 19.1 overs (Alex Blackwell 66*) by six wickets.
