Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich restricted the damage done by Kuldeep Yadav as they took Windies to 197 for 6 at Tea on the opening day of the second Test against India in Hyderabad on Friday (October 12). Three innings into the tour, Windies are yet to dominate a single session as it continued to be a mismatch with Kuldeep enjoying his good run. After starting at 86 for 3, Windies lost two more to Kuldeep before a 69-run stand steadied things.
Early into the session, it became quite clear that the Windies middle-order continues to be wobbly against spin. Shimron Hetmyer was trapped in front while offering no shot to a Kuldeep delivery while Ambris tried to attack his way out of trouble. However, the technical glitches in approach meant he wasn’t able to flourish. He charged Kuldeep to flick a ball to the on side but ended up leading edge the ball to cover. At 113 for 5, Windies were in trouble and wobbling.
Chase, in particular, was impressive against Kuldeep while Dowrich put his head down for a grind. The former had no issues picking up the variations and was happy to play the field. Both batsmen did attack Ravindra Jadeja to pick up a few runs as they frustrated the hosts for 124 deliveries. This was the first Windies partnership that lasted more than 100 deliveries in the series before Umesh Yadav came back to dismiss Dowrish with an incoming delivery. The right-hander got stuck in his crease and ended up getting trapped in front. While the appeal was turned down, India reviewed the call to get the decision reversed.
Chase continued to play positive cricket even with the ball reversing to pose quite a few questions. He brought up his seventh Test half-century off 80 deliveries in the 64th over. The visitors, however, will certainly not be pleased with their batsmen failing to convert their starts so far in the series. Umesh, on the other hand, shrugged off his poor and wayward start to strike two crucial blows.
Earlier, Windies got off to a steady start but lost their way in the last half of the first session. Kieran Powell threw away his wicket while trying to hit R Ashwin out of the attack while Kraigg Brathwaite resisted for 68 deliveries for his 14 before he was out lbw defending a straight ball from Kuldeep. Hope looked in exceptional touch before he fell to Umesh on the last ball before Lunch.
India handed Shardul Thakur debut in the Test but the pacer suffered a groin strain and had to walk off after bowling just ten deliveries. He has been sent for scans with his participation in the current Test still in doubt.
