For the second day in a row, Bangladesh Premier League witnessed a tense finish as Mustafizur Rahman defended nine runs off the final over to give Rajshahi Kings a five-run victory over Rangpur Riders in Dhaka.
Mashrafe Mortaza gave Riders a flying start by rattling the top-order, leaving them reeling on 36 for 3 inside the batting powerplay. Mohammad Hafeez and Zakir Hasan plotted recovery with a brief stand, but the bowling side soon hit back to cause another collapse. Hasan’s unbeaten 42 dragged Kings to a paltry 135 for 8 in 20 overs.
Riders too suffered two early blows inside the powerplay but Mohammad Mithun and Rilee Rossouw tried to get the chase going. But Mithun’s exit shook up the chasing side, leaving Rossouw to steady the ship. He did that in the company of Nahidul Islam but the latter fell on the last ball of the penultimate over to tip the scales in favour of the bowling side.
Mustafizur’s task was still massive, considering he had only nine to defend, but a slew of cutters and slower ones pinned Rossouw and Farhad Reza. They played out three dot balls and could only manage three runs, giving Kings a memorable victory.
Brief Scores: Rajshahi Kings 135/8 in 20 overs (Zakir Hasan 42*, Mohammad Hafeez 26; Farhad Reza 2-17, Mashrafe Mortaza 2-22) beat Rangpur Riders 130/6 in 20 overs (Rilee Rossouw 44*; Kamrul Islam 2-22, Mohammad Hafeez 2-22) by 5 runs.
