Melbourne Renegades Women vs Hobart Hurricanes Women

Melbourne Renegades eked out a close three-run win over Hobart Hurricanes and secured a semi-final spot for the first time ever in the Women’s Big Bash League. Hurricanes needed to get nine runs off the final over but Molly Strano conceded only five, paving a way for a landmark win. Heather Knight’s dismissal in the 18th over by Maitlan Brown was clearly the defining moment.

Erin Fazackerley’s 41-ball 52 steered the early bits of the run-chase, and Hurricanes looked on course during her 57-run opening stand with Smriti Mandhana but losing wickets at crucial times hurt them. In contrast, Renegades’s first-innings effort revolved around one quick-fire fourth-wicket partnership between Amy Satterthwaite and Jessica Duffin. While Satterthwaite scored 66 off 57 and was out only in the 19th over, Duffin made for early sluggishness with a 22-ball 30.

Brief Scores: Melbourne Renegades Women 146/6 in 20 overs (Satterthwaite 66, Duffin 30; Alex Hartley 3-21) beat Hobart Hurricanes Women 143/6 in 20 overs (Fazackerley 52, Knight 28; Lea Tahuhu 1-18) by 3 runs

Adelaide Strikers Women vs Perth Scorchers Women

Adelaide Strikers needed a win to stay in contention and they got that, with a convincing 30-run victory over Perth Scorchers at Alice Springs. But Melbourne Renegades’s win meant that the final top-four spot went to them, ending hopes for the Strikers.

Sarah Coyte and Danielle Hazell shared six wickets between them, with Megan Schutt picking two wickets. Lauren Ebsary’s standalone 30-ball 38 was the only shining light in Scorchers’s 108 all out while chasing a target of 139. Sophie Devine was the star with the bat for Strikers, scoring 59 off 48. It was a top-heavy batting effort, meaning a 41-run opening stand and then a 49-run third-wicket stand racked a total that was good enough.

Brief Scores: Adelaide Strikers Women 138/7 in 20 overs (Devine 59, Patterson 32; Heather Graham 2-25) beat Perth Scorchers Women 108 in 18.3 overs (Ebsary 38; Coyte 3-20, Hazell 3-20) by 30 runs
