Pitch Report

So here we go. With rain around for the past few days, the pitch could start off with some help to the pacers, but as expected, the pitch will assist spinners if the sun comes out soon enough and lets the pitch dry.

On the England side of things…

Prelude – Rangana Herath’s good bye

There’s nothing else to the narrative of the series opener between Sri Lanka and England than the emotional event that is going to be Rangana Herath’s Test exit. He will bid goodbye after the Galle game – from a venue where it all began for him in 1999. Roads in Galle have his posters and the stadium is adorned with flexes of him in Test whites.

Within the dressing room, there’s bound to be a few tears shed and a whole lot of gratitude for a man who effortlessly carried the side in the post-Muralitharan period. The man who filled a gaping hole will now leave behind one himself, but that’s a worry for the future. For now, for tihs moment, the spotlight’s on the genial 40-year-old left-arm spinner with 430 Test wickets to his name.

Our man in Galle, Vithushan Ehantharajah, put together a tribute piece for Herath that’s worthy of a read (or two). He writes:

“Here’s a man with greys and a paunch somehow twisting the world’s best in knots while bowling arguably the game’s second-most mundane craft.”
