England edged one step closer to picking up a consolation win after putting up their best batting performance on the tour. Joe Denly, Joe Root and Jos Buttler made vital contributions to take the lead to an imposing 448. This performance came despite the visitors losing Rory Burns off the first ball of the day to Keemo Paul, who had to be later stretchered off after picking up an injury. While we don’t know what Paul’s status is regarding the injury, Windies certainly missed him yesterday bowling with a man short throughout the day.
Denly strengthened his case for a spot in the Ashes squad with his maiden Test fifty but it was Root who stole the show. The English skipper was initially watchful before getting busier in the crease. He was involved in a century partnership alongside Buttler who departed after reaching a half-century. Root went onto reach his 16th Test century and added 71 quick runs with Ben Stokes in the final session. Stokes and Root were involved in a pretty good battle with Shannon Gabriel, who landed himself in trouble in the process.
So, how will long will England bat today is the question. The lead is 448. Perhaps, they might look to bat out the first session before declaring. With two full days still left in the Test, only one result looks possible at the moment. Welcome to the live blog for the fourth day’s play of this third and final Test.
