Asela Gunaratne, the Sri Lanka all-rounder, has been ruled out of the two Twenty20 Internationals against Bangladesh due to an injury to his right arm. The 32-year-old sustained the injury “while diving during one of the fielding drills and getting his arm caught in an awkward position,” stated an SLC media release on Thursday (February 15), which added that Gunaratne will return to Colombo where he will undergo an MRI scan before starting his rehabilitation.
Gunaratne’s injury is the latest blow for Sri Lanka who will also miss the services of Kusal Perera as the batsman suffered a side strain during the tri-nation series. While the Sri Lanka selectors named Kusal Mendis as the replacement for Perera, they won’t be naming any for Gunaratne. The tourists are also without limited-overs skipper Angelo Mathews who was forced to return home early due to a hamstring injury.
Last year, Gunaratne had fractured his left thumb during the Test series against India and had to undergo a reconstructive surgery which kept him out of action for close to five months.
The first T20I between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka gets underway at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on February 15. The second and final match of the series will be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on February 18.
