Shamarh Brooks scored a fighting ton but the India A bowlers ruled the opening day of the second unofficial Test against Windies A in Taunton on Tuesday (July 10). Windies A, after opting to bat, ended the day on 301 for 9 with Brooks unbeaten on 121.

John Campbell and Devon Thomas gave the team a steady start as they scored 49 for the opening wicket. Rajneesh Gurbani, who made his India A debut after a tremendous Ranji Trophy season, gave India A the first breakthrough as he dismissed Thomas for 27. Jermaine Blackwood was able to score only 12 while Campbell (41) threatened to post a big score before he was bowled by Vijay Shankar.

At 114 for 3, India A had an opening to pin the opposition on the mat. Shahbaz Nadeem dismissed Sunil Ambris for a duck to leave Windies A at 114 for 4 before Brooks and Raymond Reifer took the team past 150 with a 52-run stand. Brooks did all the scoring and kept the team moving forward even as the middle order disappointed.

Mohammad Siraj and Nadeem shared six wickets between them while Shankar, Gurbani and Jayant Yadav took a wicket each to help India A nose ahead. Brooks got to his fifth first-class ton with a boundary off Nadeem in the 79th over off 189 deliveries. Sherman Lewis resisted valiantly and stitched a 90-run stand with Brooks for the ninth wicket to frustrate the Indian bowlers in the last hour of play. Lewis was eventually dismissed with three overs to go in the day.

Brief scores: Windies A 301/9 (Shamarh Brooks 121*; Shahbaz Nadeem 3-42) vs India A.
