The rain interruptions and the overs lost as a result didn’t matter. It was supposed to be a race against time for England to polish off India due to the weather but following another fruitful session, the Lord’s Test is all set to finish inside four days as the Indian batsmen surrendered meekly yet again.
Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara gave the Indian contingent slight hope after battling hard for nine overs without getting dislodged, before the resistance was broken by Stuart Broad. After troubling Rahane for a couple of deliveries in succession, Broad got his reward with the batsman edging one to second slip. The dismissal brought Virat Kohli out to the middle and the Indian skipper was grimacing very soon with his back troubling him.
Pujara finally found his first boundary off the 69th delivery that he faced and his ability to bat as deep as possible remained key to India’s chances of batting through the day. But a few overs later, Broad produced a brute to breach Pujara’s defence as a fast inswinger hit his pad before rattling the stumps.
From thereon, it didn’t take long for England to tighten the screws as Broad killed any minor hopes India had in the space of two deliveries. Kohli first survived a review after a short ball down the leg missed his glove but a similar delivery next up did him in with a short leg in place. The skipper gloved the shortish delivery to the short leg fielder which prompted Kohli to take the review, and India lost it eventually.
Dinesh Karthik then got another inswinger that dashed into his pads for the umpire to raise his finger again. The wicketkeeper-batsman tentatively reviewed the decision but had to walk back to the pavilion anyway. It’s just a matter of time from here on.
Brief scores: India 107 & 66/6 (Cheteshwar Pujara 17; Stuart Broad 4-16, James Anderson 2-9) trail England 396/7 decl. by 223 runs.
