UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio —In a high-scoring day at Ohio State Golf Club’s Scarlet Course, Northwestern played steady golf to sit in fourth place after 18 holes of competition.
In this three-day, top-five-advance event, the Wildcats are five strokes head of sixth-place Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State is in first place at 3-under at the par-71 golf course. As for individuals, Illinois’ Michael Feagles is in the lead, also at three strokes under par.
As a sign of their consistent play, Wildcats made 60 pars, only three shy of the leader Illinois (63).
Hawkins, who did not record a bogey until his 13th hole, finished with a 1-over 72 and is in a 13th-place tie. Three of his last four opening rounds have been at or better than 72.
McIntosh kept a clean front nine — while adding one birdie — and finished with a 1-over 72 in his first-ever postseason round. Relative to par, the 1-over performance was his best since carding a middle-round 69 in the season-opening OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.
Senior Sam Triplett logged the next-best round for NU, a 2-over 73. The Second Team All-Big Ten honoree’s round was his best-ever at an NCAA Regional event.
The Wildcats will tee off tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. CT in day two of the NCAA Regionals event and will be paired with Penn State and Texas Tech, who are in fifth and sixth, respectively. The order will be as follows: Ryan Lumsden (7 a.m.), Dylan Wu (7:11 a.m.), Sam Triplett (7:22 a.m.), Eric McIntosh (7:33 a.m.), and Everton Hawkins (7:44 a.m.).
