- But Foakes dug in with Jos Buttler and Sam Curran to regain some respectibility
Ben Foakes will be aiming to complete a century on his England Test debut as the tourists start the second day against Sri Lanka on 321 for eight.
The wicketkeeper, in the side for the injured Jonny Bairstow, seized his chance with both hands but hitting an unbeaten 87 on the opening day at Galle.
He helped England rebuild their innings after the all-too-familiar upper order batting collapse saw them reeling at 103 for five after Joe Root had won the toss and elected to bat.
Opener Rory Burns and Moeen Ali fell to Suranga Lakmal in consecutive balls as England made the worst possible start in pursuit of their first away Test victory in two years.
Joe Root and Keaton Jennings steadied the ship with a partnership of 62 before both falling before England entered three figures.
And when Ben Stokes was out playing an ill-advised sweep shot for just seven, England looked likely to be skitted cheaply.
But Foakes excelled, first with Jos Buttler (38) and then with Sam Curran (48) to put himself within touching distance of a remarkable century.
