Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 golfer in the world, is already getting his oldest son Tatum into the sport he’s dominating.
But there’s been collateral damage in the process.
“I take him out in the yard and we hit balls, and we hit balls in the house and break stuff,” he told For The Win last week.
And what does his finacee Paulina Gretzky think of that?
“I make sure she’s not home,” he said with a chuckle.
But what happens when she gets home?
“I get yelled at.”
Luckily, he says, nothing important has been broken, save for a few dents in a wall.
Johnson spoke to us while promoting his newest BodyArmor Lyte ad, and he covered other topics including golf fans, his secret to driving the ball far and wedding talk.
(This interview has been condensed and edited.)
BodyArmor has a bunch of other athletes who sponsor it. Have you met any of them?
No, but me and Kobe Bryant (who is an investor) have talked a couple of times about the drink. We just talked about the brand. He’s pretty savvy.
There have been complaints from golfers on tour about fans. Do you think there’s a problem with rowdy galleries?
The fans are great, they do a great job. It’s the one fan out of the many of thousands who comes out who gets on some guys’ nerves. It’s like that in every single sport. But that’s how it goes. It’s something we deal with as a professional athlete. I enjoy having them out watching.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve heard a fan yell?
You hear so many things, you try not to listen to them. When they say, “Go in the hole!” and it’s on like a 500-yard par 4, I wish, but it’s just not going to happen.
What’s your secret to driving the ball so far?
It’s a lot of different things. Being flexible is definitely a big part of it. I’m fairly tall so I’ve got a bigger arc that generates speed. I don’t have to swing as hard as I can to make the ball go far.
What happened to filming all those music videos with Paulina?
(laughs) I think I’m retired from the music video industry.
Are you two planning a wedding soon?
We’re going to for sure, we don’t have a set date yet, but we’re in the planning process.
You probably don’t want to publicize it, but where might you have the wedding?
Wherever Paulina wants to have it.
