United States v Colombia Live Commentary & Result, 11/10/2018, Friendlies

10′ Dangerous from Green who tries a shot from an audacious distance. The curler with his right foot narrowly misses the post but forces Ospina into a full-stretch dive to protect his goal nonetheless.

8′ Colombia have found success down the right early in the match, with Arias and James giving Robinson a handful. Their two attempts at goal have come from through balls played down the right-back position – forcing Brooks to come across and defend in uncomfortable areas.

6′ James attempts to curl a shot into the top corner from outside the area, but the shot hits the gloves of Steffen who palms it down before taking it off the bounce.

4′ ALMOST FOR COLOMBIA! Robinson and Brooks make a mess of a clearance which allows Arias to get on the ball and float a cross to Falcao which the striker hammers just wide from inside the penalty area.

3′ America start the match on the front foot, passing the ball through the Colombia midfield. They seem relatively composed despite Colombia’s early pressing.

1′ The United States get the match underway!

Colombia field an extremely experienced side, as nine of the starting XI were taken to the 2018 World Cup. Ospina takes his place between the posts defended by Arias, Sanchez, Murillo and Machado – the latter two being the lone pair who weren’t in Russia. Uribe and Cuadrado play on the flanks in midfield either side of James and Barrios while in attack, Bacca pairs captain Falcao.

Dave Sarachan fields a relatively youthful XI, but one filled with European experience. Steffen starts in goal behind a back four of Robinson, Brooks, Miazga and Yedlin. Acosta plays in midfield alongside veteran presence Bradley who captains the side in his return. In attack, Saief, Green and PSG forward Weah will look to supply Wood who plays up top alone.

Colombia Substitutes: Sebastian Villa, Juan Quintero, Felipe Aguilar, Yimmi Chara, Cristian Borja, Edwin Cardona, Juan Daniel Roa, Didier Moreno, Oscar Murillo, Miguel Borja, Helibelton Palacios, Alvaro Montero.

Colombia Starting XI (4-4-2): David Ospina; Santiago Arias, Davinson Sanchez, Jeison Murillo, Deiver Machado; Mateus Uribe, James Rodriguez, Wilmar Barrios, Juan Cuadrado; Radamel Falcao, Carlos Bacca.

United States Substitutes: Marco Delgado, Joshua Sargent, Wil Trapp, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reggie Cannon, Ben Sweat, Andrija Novakovic, Brad Guzan.

United States Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Zack Steffen; Antonee Robinson, John Brooks, Matt Miazga, DeAndre Yedlin; Kellyn Acosta, Michael Bradley; Kenny Saief, Julian Green, Timothy Weah; Bobby Wood.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, the team news has been confirmed! Let’s start with the home side!

Arturo Reyes is in interim charge of the side while the FA search for the best person to take the squad into 2019’s Copa America in Brazil. It appears as though Los Cafeteros won’t take this international break lightly, as superstars including James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado have all been included in the 24-man squad.

Colombia is in a state of flux as well, after the departure of legendary manager Jose Pekerman. The Argentine’s contract was not extended by the Colombian FA after six years at the helm which included two World Cup knock-out stage appearances as well as quarter-final and semi-final exits in the Copa America.

Their performance against El Tri may not have been scintillating, but Tyler Adams’ first goal for the Stars and Stripes four minutes after an Angel Zaldivar red card brought the fans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville into the match nonetheless. They’ll need the support of the Tampa crowd if they are to overcome a Colombia side who have not lost in 90 minutes since the opening fixture of the World Cup.

A victory over North American rivals Mexico during the last international break has given the USA squad a bit of a boost after enduring a run of three friendly matches without a victory. Dave Sarachan remains in charge of the squad in a caretaker capacity and has maintained a philosophy centred around youth, with the next CONCACAF Gold Cup a year away.
