Transfer news: Sevilla secure striker Andre Silva on loan from Milan

The Portugal international heads to La Liga after an mixed first season in Serie A, and will bring some much-needed firepower to Pablo Machin’s side

Andre Silva has paused his difficult spell with Milan in Serie A after completing a loan move to Sevilla, who have secured a purchase option in the deal.

The Portugal international joined Milan from Porto last year as part of a significant recruitment drive by the Italian club, who spent a reported €38m (£34m/$43m) on the 22-year-old.

But his debut campaign did not go to plan, with Silva only finding the net twice in 24 league appearances.

His haul of eight goals in 14 Europa League outings at least ensured his reputation did not take too much of a battering, as he earned a place in Portugal’s World Cup squad.

But Milan have allowed him to depart the club on a temporary basis, with Sevilla finally signing a striker after missing out on a number of other targets during the current window.

Bas Dost, Vincent Aboubakar, Nikola Kalinic and Michy Batshuayi had all been strongly linked with the Andalusians, but none arrived at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Silva will compete with Wissam Ben Yedder and Luis Muriel for a starting berth in attack, and Sevilla can buy the forward outright at the end of the season if the temporary spell proves fruitful for both club and players.

He becomes their seventh acquisition of the off-season, following the purchase of winger Aleix Vidal, midfielders Ibrahim Amadou and Roque Mesa, defensive duo Sergi Gomez and Joris Gnagnon and goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

They have also lost former Nancy defender Clement Lenglet to Barcelona following the Catalan club’s trigger of his release clause of €35m (£31m/$40m) and Joaquin Correa to Lazio.

Having finished in the top four in 2016-17, Sevilla only managed to muster a seventh-place finish last season and have brought in former Girona coach Pablo Machin following the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella, though they did reach the final of the Copa del Rey.

They kick off their domestic season with the Supercopa de Espana against Barcelona on August 12 at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier, Morocco, before their opening La Liga game against newly-promoted Rayo Vallecano a week later on August 19.
