Portugal v Italy Live Commentary & Result, 10/09/2018, UEFA Nations League

Italy have won 18 of the 25 games played against Portugal, drawing two and losing five.

Mancini makes a host of changes to his side, with only Donnarumma and Jorginho retaining their spot from the draw with Poland. As ever, Mario Balotelli has not been too far from the headlines after being dropped following that game – although his fitness was cited as an issue alongside his poor performance.

Fernando Santos names an unchanged side to the Portugal team that drew with Croatia on Thursday, with Bruma facing the biggest challenge to fill the void left by Ronaldo’s absence. Ramos and Mendes are the two players on the bench that will hope to make their debut.

Italy subs: Salvatore Sirigu, Mattia Perin, Nicolo Barella, Emerson, Federico Bernardeschi, Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Belotti, Giorgio Chiellini, Marco Benassi, Lorenzo Insigne, Roberto Gagliardini, Domenico Berardi.

Portugal subs: Beto, Claudio Ramos, Luis Neto, Renato Sanches, Gelson Martins, Pedro Mendes, Sergio Oliveira, Goncalo Guedes, Bruno Fernandes, Cedric Soares, Gelson Fernandes.

Italy XI (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Manuel Lazzari, Mattia Caldara, Alessio Romagnoli, Domenico Criscito; Byran Cristante, Jorginho, Giacomo Bonaventura; Simone Zaza, Ciro Immobile, Federico Chiesa.

Portugal XI (4-3-3): Rui Patricio; Joao Cancelo, Pepe, Ruben Dias, Mario Rui; William Carvalho, Ruben Neves, Pizzi; Bernardo Silva, Andre Silva, Bruma.

Italy, meanwhile, were one of the heavy hitters to watch the World Cup from home and began life under Roberto Mancini with a 1-1 draw against Poland in their inaugural Nations League clash. They too have plenty to prove and have lost a number of veterans to retirement in recent months, including the legendary Gianluigi Buffon.

Portugal sat and watched earlier this week when many other European nations began their Nations League fixtures, instead clashing with Croatia in a friendly and drawing 1-1. After a disappointing campaign in the World Cup, the defending European champions have plenty to prove in the build-up to their title defence in 2020.
