Srikar Bharat continued his steep rise as a wicketkeeper-batsman with a brilliant hundred against Australia A on the third day’s play at Alur. In partnership with Kuldeep Yadav, who scored a superb 52, Bharat helped put on a 113-run stand for the eighth wicket, effectively ironing out the opposition with an eventual first-innings lead of 159. Batting the second time, Australia A lost two early wickets, pushing the hosts into a position of dominance on Monday (September 10).

India A captain Shreyas Iyer earlier fell in the seventh over of the day, bowled by Mitchell Marsh to hand Australia A’s captain his only wicket. That brought Bharat to the crease, who joined Shubman Gill in the middle to forge a 41-run stand for the fifth wicket. Gill fell before lunch but not before a registering a fifty, his second in first-class cricket.

India A lost two more wickets in the afternoon session, those of Krishnappa Gowtham and Deepak Chahar for scores of 20 and 6 respectively. That is when Kuldeep joined forces with Bharat in the middle and helped India A post a mammoth 505. Chris Tremain and Ashton Agar picked three wickets apiece, latter picking Bharat’s wicket – the last to fall.

With a 159-run deficit, Australia A’s openers stuttered against spin. Kurtis Patterson was bowled by Gowtham in the ninth over, while Matt Renshaw fell to Shahbaz Nadeem soon after. Still 121 runs behind, Australia A’s fortunes rest on Travis Head (4*) and Peter Handscomb (1*), latter having another shot at overturning a string of dismal first-class scores.

Brief Scores: Australia A 346 & 38/2 (Renshaw 19; Gowtham 1-3, Nadeem 1-21) trail India A 505 (Bharat 106; Tremain 3-41, Agar 3-87) by 121 runs.
