The chatter before the commencement of Day 1 of the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy quarterfinals was all about the blockbuster game between Mumbai and Karnataka. However, the latter took a firm grip on the proceedings by cleaning up Mumbai for just 173 and then ended the day at 115 for 1, trailing by just 58.
Vinay Kumar was the hero of the day for the South Zone side, taking a six-fer which included a hat-trick. Mayank Agarwal, the man in golden touch, essayed yet another fifty to provide finishing touches for Karnataka’s commanding show. Dhawal Kulkarni’s 75 was the long bright spot for Mumbai.
In other matches, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Anustup Majumdar’s 175-run stand helped Bengal to recover from 59 for 4 to 261 for 6 versus Gujarat. However, Siddharth Desai and Gaja picked up the wickets of both the batsmen in the final session to ensure the defending champions finished the day in front.
Kerala, the surprise package of the tournament, maintained their momentum by reducing Vidarbha to 45 for 3 at stumps, on a day where inclement weather ensured the first two sessions were called off. Faiz Fazal and Ramaswamy, the in form batsmen for Vidarbha, are already back in the pavilion.
In Vijaywada, Delhi chipped in with wickets at regular intervals to surge ahead versus MP. The Central Zone side was 223 for 6 at stumps. Ankit Dane compiled a well measured 59 while Harpreet Singh is batting on 47.
