Hello and welcome to the Live Blog of Day 3 of the second Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Dhaka. “In the subcontinent when Aussies or other teams come we give this wicket but Sri Lanka has a good spin attack. I don’t know why they gave a wicket like this,” Roshen Silva said after the second day’s play, expressing surprise over the spin-friendly surface that has resulted in 28 wickets falling in the first two days.
Sri Lanka, despite being eight down for 200, are in a commanding position, thanks first to Akila Dananjaya’s three-wicket haul that helped bundle out Bangladesh for 112 which helped Sri Lanka take a 112-run lead. Sri Lanka’s batsmen then came up with useful contributions, led by Silva’s unbeaten 58, to stretch the lead to 312.
On a surface that won’t get any better, Bangladesh are already staring at a huge target and Sri Lanka will look at adding more and put further pressure on the hosts. Even if Bangladesh manage to pick up the remaining two wickets quickly on Day 3, the hosts will have to come up with a big effort with the bat.
A target of 215 (against West Indies in July 2009), when Bangladesh achieved 217 to win by four wickets is their highest fourth-innings total in a successful chase. With a 300-plus target (or more) in front of them, the batsmen need to come up with something special. Mehidy Hasan, however, believes anything is possible.
