Shoaib Akhtar, the world’s fastest bowler of his time, has been drafted in as a mentor by Lahore Qalandars for the upcoming season of Pakistan Super League. “I’m honored and privileged to be a part of Qalandars,” Akhtar said of his appointment with the franchise on Friday (October 6).
In an attempt to nurture the young talent in the squad, Qalandars have signed the 42-year-old who will share his mentoring duties with Aaqib Javid, another former Pakistan pacer, and now the franchise director.
The Qalandars have followed a unique method in discovering outrageous fast bowling talent; for instance, Yasir Jan – an ambidextrous pacer – was signed by the franchise on a ten-year contract last year. And for the upcoming season, it is learnt that another fast bowler, Haris Rauf – who could bowl at 92 miles per hour – has been signed on a similar contract. Apparently, the franchise got interested in Rauf when they saw him at a talent hunt held in Gujranwala.
Speaking about the prospect of working work with Rauf, Shoaib remarked that he was ‘extremely thrilled and excited,’ and added “Haris is from Pindi and he is the find of Aaqib Javed. Aaqib knows a talent when he sees one.”
Rauf will now be part of the Qalandars’ development squad that will travel to Australia to play against the Big Bash League (BBL) franchises Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers. Lahore Qalandars won only three of their eight games in the previous season of PSL, and thus, finished bottom of the table.
